I have seen the future of animated CG features . . .
. . . and it is this:
Well, not this per se, but the film that DreamWorks is making based on the book. I just saw a couple of sequences, and what I saw was simply the best CG feature animation I’ve ever seen. And by that I don’t mean just the animation, but everything about the film.
I’ve used the cover of the book because there isn’t anything out there that remotely shows what the film really looks like. Dean De Blois and Chris Saunders writing and directing. Roger Deakins consulting on cinematography. Nico Marlet’s designs. Simon Otto obsessively supervising the animation. An experienced, talented crew hitting on all cylinders.
I don’t want to see anything else about the movie till it opens, and I’m going to try to forget what I already saw, to maximize my experience on March 26. Prepare to be amazed.

glad to hear it! i have friends working on it and they sound pretty excited about how it’s turning out. and of course the animation’s good! simon is so tall that i’d be afraid he’d kick my butt if i didn’t turn in shot after shot of awesomeness

When was the last time the audience cried at a dw film?
At the first Dragon test screening, only half animated.
Can’t wait to see it on the big screen.

Really cool trailer, I just checked it out. I’m not doggin’ on it, but does it feel like Iron Giant but with dragon? Or maybe Dragonheart?

Ivan, I didn’t watch the trailer until just now. I’m glad I saw a couple of sequences from early in the film before I saw that trailer, because I think it gives way too much away, and because it changes the context of some of the shots. I’m not sure I would be so excited about the film if I’d only seen the trailer.
And from what I’ve seen, Iron Giant didn’t come to mind for me. I never saw all of Dragonheart, but I think about all they have in common is the dragon.
And hello Mala, how are the other pollywogs up north?

The grumpy polywog is about to start ironmanning.
Trailer does give too much away, but so far the response seems very positive.

As far as I’m concerned now is an exciting time for animation films, there lots of them; and Dragon will be the cherry on top. Have you seen Cloudy Chance w Meatball? Would love to hear your review/opinion if you’ve seen it.

At our PDI DreamWorks tour last Tuesday, we were shown a few more snippets of the movie, some were playblasts. The animation is top notch. We were also shown some parts of Shrek 4, but HTTYD is on a whole different level. Can’t wait to see it.
